Holy Conversations

As a part of the Methodism 101 Summer Sunday School Series, last Sunday Rev. Chris Mesa discussed current issues in United Methodism (lecture and slides are available here). One of these pressing issues for our global denomination is what is commonly referred to as the "Way Forward on Human Sexuality." The special session of General Conference in February of 2019 will receive a report from the Commission on a Way Forward, a group of 32 lay people, clergy persons, and bishops who have been meeting over the last two years to discern how The United Methodist Church is to move forward regarding the current impasse on how we are to be in ministry with LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Queer) persons.

It is unclear what the final decision or decisions of the 2019 General Conference will be and how those decisions will impact annual conferences and local churches. Nevertheless, it is time for our Arborlawn community to begin having conversation about where we are in regards to human sexuality and ministry with LGBTQ persons.

In October we will host the first round of Holy Conversations: A Way Forward for The United Methodist Church Regarding Human Sexuality. These conversations are just that, a time for conversation. Holy Conversations are not a time in which we will try to convince our friends and neighbors to change their minds, but rather are a time in which we share our stories, our thoughts, and our ideas so that we might better understand each other. These three sessions: Sunday, October 14 at 12:15 pm, Tuesday, October 16 at 10:00 am, and Tuesday, October 16 at 6:00 pm will all be similar in format and in questions explored. Each session will be facilitated by Rev. Chris Mesa.

Please choose the time that works best for you, and RSVP to Ethan Gregory ( or 817-731-0701).
