Arborlawn’s nursery is a place where each child receives loving care and attention. Children from infants to toddlers are in age-appropriate rooms located on the first floor of the main church building.

Sunday | 8:30 am – Noon | Rooms 125, 127, Sanctuary Level

The 2-year old Sunday School is taught by Janet Nelson and Allie Cobb. The 2-year old class uses a hands-on curriculum complete with story boards to help illustrate each lesson. With two helpers from our nursery staff for assistance, this class also incorporates songs, crafts, and finger plays to engage this precious group of tiny disciples. They are learning about God’s love for them in a safe and nurturing environment.

Sunday | 9:45 – 10:45 am | Room 126

The 3 and 4-year old class is taught by Sabrina Gordon and Benita Harper. They spend each week reading a Bible story and then elaborating on it using drama, crafts, or games. The blocks come in handy for the stories of Babel and Jericho, and each year the students receive the royal treatment during the lesson about Jesus washing the feet of the disciples. They have made gingerbread nativities, as well as many themed crafts as the children learn and experience God’s love.

Sunday | 9:45 – 10:45 am | Room 120

Welcome to Mr.Roy’s K-1 Sunday school class. If you have ever ventured into the Sunday school area, chances are you’ve seen or heard Mr. Roy! His boisterous enthusiasm is hard to miss. Roy and Laurie Topham have been teaching Sunday school for 20 years. They’ve taught Kindergarten, confirmation classes, and everything in between.

Throughout the year, the Topham’s classes can be seen wandering through the “wilderness” (halls of Arborlawn), stopping to have “manna” (donuts) from heaven. They can be heard in our Sanctuary, as the children deliver the Ten Commandments to Moses from “Mount Sinai” (the pulpit). The Tophams have led their classes to numerous bible towns, including Bethlehem, where, loaded with suitcases for the trip, the children looked for a place to stay. Their students have shot down a paper Goliath with slingshots and nerf balls, as well as looked for “lost” (hidden) sheep with each of their names on them! Who says learning about God’s Word can’t be fun? Don’t miss out – bring your Kindergarten and 1st graders to Sunday school and let them join the fun. (But don’t be late – because who knows where they might be traveling next?)

Sunday | 9:45 – 10:45 am | Room 133

What does the Bible say? Steve and Susan Pike’s Sunday school class is finding out that God’s Word is something they can really understand and follow! The Pikes have been longtime Sunday school teachers. Susan has served on the curriculum team at Arborlawn and has taught rotation style Sunday school since its inception. Steve looks forward to the one room style class again, since he enjoys getting to know the children from week to week. Assisting the Pikes, Lori Carrender has served in the children’s Sunday school department since Day One of Arborlawn. Her quiet, personable rapport with the children is invaluable.

In preparation for the 3rd grade students to receive their own bibles each Fall, the children will learn to navigate their bibles as they act out different stories, learn where they are located within God’s Word, and how the lessons they learn can be applied in their own lives today. Look for Arborlawn’s 2nd graders on the first Sunday of every month, where you might see them serving with the Pikes as greeters before our 11:00 service. You might also spy a few of them helping to pass out bulletins when Steve is serving as an usher.

Sunday | 9:45 – 10:45 am | Room 146

Cathy Lin and Tammy Pfrang are teaching this sophisticated group of young disciples using a Cokesbury curriculum. Beginning with the Old Testament and moving through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, the class will also spend some time learning about the Fruits of the Spirit. Although many of the topics might seem familiar, this teaching team finds new ways to surprise their students and keep them interested, playing games as well as enjoying thematic snacks. They are digging into bible truths with lively discussion, which is fitting for this more mature and insightful age group. In addition, the weekly youth helpers promote relationships and a sense of familiarity, as the students look forward to the day that they, too, will be joining Youth Activities within our church.
