our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and
with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no
commandment greater than these.”
[ MARK 12:29-31 ]
"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for
one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
[ MATTHEW 25:40 ]
Every group of every age is involved in mission work at Arborlawn UMC. There are missions we support with our own hands; missions in which we share objects that we already have (labels, pull-tabs, gently used clothing); missions that require our time or skills; missions that provide in-kind services in partnership; missions that involve shopping; and missions to which we send financial support. Representatives of all Arborlawn generations go on mission trips each year.
Missions are simply what we do. We do them because it is the tangible way we demonstrate our devotion to God.
Arborlawn members have created and invented mission projects since the beginning of this church. They ask for God’s guidance in using their time and talents well. They study themselves and know what they can do. They study their neighborhoods. They learn what else is needed. They look at what is and ask “What really needs to be done next?”
The founder of the United Methodist Church, John Wesley, wrote “Do all the good you can for all the people you can for ever as long as you can.” John Wesley created missions. Doing good with others is one of the Three Simple Rules of the United Methodist Church. There are four focus areas in the United Methodist Church. One focus area is “Engage in mission with people.” This means we do not do mission for others or to others. We are to abide shoulder-to-shoulder with people for a time, sharing together not just the blessings of giving and receiving but also the blessings of relationship in Christ.
